MANSFIELD, LA — At its June 5th board meeting, the DeSoto Parish School Board held a special ceremony to dedicate its board room in memory of the late Louis James (L.J.) Mayweather, Jr. honoring his extraordinary legacy of service to public education and the DeSoto Parish community.
Mr. Mayweather faithfully served on the DeSoto Parish School Board for four decades, from 1980 to 2020, making him the longest-serving board member in the district’s history. During the dedication, Superintendent Clay Corley, current board members, and members of the Mayweather family gathered to unveil a commemorative plaque and reflect on his lifelong commitment to students, families, and the advancement of education in DeSoto Parish.
The plaque reads:
“With profound respect and deep appreciation, this Board Room is dedicated to the memory of L.J. Mayweather, Jr. His unwavering dedication and consistent devotion to DeSoto Parish Schools has left an everlasting imprint on this community.
L.J.’s legacy is not only that of a remarkable leader but also a cherished friend. With forty continuous years of service from 1980–2020, he stands as the longest-serving member of the DeSoto Parish School Board. Through the seasons of change, challenges, and triumphs, his guiding hand and wise counsel remain a constant.
May this room serve as a lasting tribute to a man whose passion for education and dedication to our community knew no bounds. In every decision made and every discussion held within these walls, may the spirit of L.J. Mayweather, Jr. inspire and guide us forward.”
Board President Donnie Dufour reflected on Mr. Mayweather’s impact, saying, “L.J. wasn’t just a leader; he was a pillar in our community. His voice, his vision, and his heart for children shaped this district in ways that will be felt for generations.”
Mr. Mayweather’s service spanned decades of educational change and progress. He was widely respected for his steady leadership, thoughtful insight, and tireless advocacy for excellence in education.
The newly named L.J. Mayweather Jr. Board Room stands as a meaningful tribute and enduring reminder of a man whose legacy will continue to influence the decisions and direction of DeSoto Parish Schools.
