Section 504

SECTION 504 DEFINED

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability in any program receiving federal funds. Section 504 states that:

     "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall, solely by reason of her         or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied, the benefits of, or be subjected to       discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

POLICY STATEMENT

The policy of the DeSoto Parish School Board regarding Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is:

“Qualified handicapped persons will not be discriminated against on the basis of handicap in any program, activity or employment practice.” “A handicapped person is defined as any person who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such impairment, or is regarded as having such impairment.”
